Banner 9

Last Updated 07/06/2017

ITS has begun a multiyear project to upgrade from Banner 8 to Banner 9, also referred to as Banner XE. The first phase of the upgrade will take approximately one year and will focus on administrative Banner, also known as Internet Native Banner (INB). The second phase of the upgrade will focus on self-service Banner (SSB), also known as myBanner or Banner Web.  A start date for phase II, as well as additional details, will be announced later.

Administrative Banner 8 is based on Oracle forms. In Administrative Banner 9, Oracle Forms are replaced by JAVA pages, which means that the look, feel, and navigation of these pages will change. Banner upgrades will be applied individually to each module (Finance, General, Position Control, Human Resources, Accounts Receivable, Advancement, Financial Aid, and Student) instead of a single upgrade applied to all modules simultaneously. Once the upgrade is complete, all Banner 8 Oracle forms will have been replaced with Banner 9 JAVA pages, but during the upgrade, Banner 8 forms and Banner 9 pages will co-exist within the same production Banner system.

While Banner 9 supports all current browsers, Banner 8 forms still require the Java plugin to function. Banner 8 supported browsers (with Java enabled) include Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox. Until all Banner 8 forms are converted to Banner Admin Pages, the recommendation is to use Internet Explorer, Safari, or Firefox.

While Banner 9 Java Pages are supported by all browsers, Internet Explorer is the only browser that will render Banner 8 forms.

Because Banner 9 runs in a web browser, some keyboard shortcuts had to be changed while others no longer work. A list of Keyboard Shortcuts is available.

Yes, you can access all Banner 8 and Banner 9 that you have permissions to access.

Banner 8 and Banner 9 function the same, and Banner 9 JAVA pages have the same names as their Banner 8 Oracle forms predecessors.  Banner 9 pages have a more modern look, are more intuitive and easier to navigate.  Thus, while you will need to learn how to navigate Banner 9 JAVA pages, attending one of the preview sessions and hands-on sessions should give you the knowledge that you need.

In Banner 9, the items previously under “Options” can be found in the “Related” list or the “Tools” list located on the upper right corner of the screen.

This means that you are trying to open an object that has been released as a Banner 9 Java Page and it is no longer available as a Banner 8 object.
To access the Banner 9 Java Page, click the Home Page link to return to Application Navigator and enter the Java Page name.

The steps to find the field name: go to the Banner 9 Java Page that displays the field, move your cursor to that field, select the Tools icon in the upper right corner of the screen, select Item Properties on the Tools menu, and the field name is shown as the value for Physical Name.

A few filtering tips include:  Filters in Banner 9 are case sensitive.  Verify that you have selected the appropriate operator from the drop down for your expected results.  Multiple fields can be selected to narrow your results.
