Maintaining Your Mac
With the release of Mac OS-X, Macintosh users have access to a
much more stable and responsive operating system. This new operating
system has an underlying UNIX core with excellent memory protection,
advanced memory management, and preemptive multitasking capabilities.
In contrast, neither Mac OS-9 or its “Classic” environment
(under Mac OS-X) offer memory protection to applications; therefore,
having a heightened knowledge of RAM allocation for Mac OS-9 applications
is very important for making the best of this unprotected environment.
In addition, Mac OS-9 applications running in the Classic environment
under Mac OS-X will run more slowly than if running directly under
Mac OS-9. The performance of Mac OS-9 must be optimized if decent
performance is to be expected while running a Mac OS-9 applications
under “Classic” within Mac OS-X.
