ITS Windows Vista Recommendations
Windows Vista Overview
Microsoft announced that the latest versions of its Windows Vista operating system became available in January, 2007. Everyone should be aware that there are compatibility issues between Vista and some major systems in use at MSU.
Existing Issues with Windows Vista
A number of software applications currently in use at MSU are not yet compatible with Windows Vista. ITS recommends that users delay upgrading to Vista until these applications are updated by their manufacturers. Some of the known compatibility issues are:
- Novell Client (beta client due soon, but full release not likely until late Spring 2008)
- SAS
- SPSS
- Autodesk software bundles (except AutoCAD)
- Oracle
- older versions of Microsoft Office
Vista Requirements
Microsoft's Vista operating system requires a more robust, hardware intensive computer than previous versions of Microsoft's operating systems (e.g., Windows XP). The minimum hardware specifications ITS has defined for Windows Vista is as follows:
- Processor: 2.4 GHz Pentium 4
- Memory: 2 GB
- Video Card: DirectX 9 capable with 256 MB video memory
- Hard Disk: 80 GB
- Optical Drive: DVD-ROM
- Operating System: Windows VISTA
Vista Support
The support offered by ITS will initially be for Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. However, Vista Enterprise may be a desirable choice in some cases. Vista Enterprise is more expensive, requires “Software Assurance”, and a Microsoft software maintenance subscription. If ITS provides desktop support for your office, please check with your IT consultant before purchasing.
Vista Compatability with GroupWise Internet Interface
With Internet Explorer open, go to the Tools pulldown menu and select Internet Options. Select the Advanced tab. Scroll to the Security Section (at the bottom) and uncheck TLS 1.0 and check SSL 2.0. Click OK.
